pdflatex is needed for pdf output. The results I got were: This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.4-1.40.13 (MiKTeX 2.9 64-bit) pdflatex: The memory dump file could not be found. Rolling back to RMarkdown 1.8 fixed it for me (after going crazy for multiple days trying to fix).
